Lieutenant colonel Hubert Meriaux of the Vaucluse gendarmerie shared that Mr. Wang fell of a wall in Bonnieux, a popular village for tourists.
Meriaux shares, “He stood on the edge of a sharp drop to get his family to take a picture of him, and fell.” The rescue services who responded were unable to revive him.
French police add that based on eyewitness accounts, his death was most certainly an accident.
According to an interview with Caixin, Wang was “doing personal soul-searching over his role in the company’s acquisitions and forced sell-offs.”
He was 57 years old.
He was the co-chairman of the HNA group, one of the world’s biggest companies
Based in Haikou, Hainan, China, the HNA group is one of the largest companies in the world.
It was co-founded by the Chinese billionaire Wang Jian back in 1993, starting with an airline company. Since it’s humble beginnings, it has expanded into finance, hotels, logistics, and is also one of the most active investment companies in the world.
It’s currently ranked No.170 in the 2017 Fortune 500 list.
Wang’s death is a great loss to HNA, as the group was selling their assets in order to reduce their debt load. The prices of the company’s dollar bonds also fell as a result of his death.
HNA’s co-founder, Chen Feng, is set to become the chairman of HNA in the wake of Wang’s untimely demise.
