Before Fresh Off The Boat, Constance Wu Was In Debt & Worked Three Jobs

We can't imagine how tough it must have been for her!

"Crazy Rich Asians" is generating some serious buzz. Released August 15, it holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (and even ranked 100% at one point!). Constance Wu plays the lead in the movie. She is also famous for her role on Fresh Off The Boat. But before that, life saw Constance Wu in debt and holding three jobs.

Constance Wu in debt, with three jobs: Life before FOTB

Arriving in L.A. in 2010, Wu had stars in her eyes and put all her eggs in this basket. Hoping to make it big, she had journeyed hard to get to here. But nothing was guaranteed.

“I was in tens of thousands of dollars in debt: credit card. Car. Personal. Student loans. I paid for my college all myself. I didn’t have a boyfriend. I was really alone and lonely. I was new in the city, and I didn’t have a community of friends in L.A.”

“I was really broke, the American-born Taiwanese actress told Vulture in a 2016 interview.

She was holding jobs waiting tables, nannying, being a personal assistant and struggling to keep her head above water. All this whilst receiving rejection after rejection at different auditions.

"I had a moment where I had to ask myself, ‘If you’re still a waitress when you’re 45, is that cool?' I decided that I was”, the 36-year old told The Cut also in 2016.

In the face of these difficulties, Wu chose to persevere and stayed on her path to become an actress.

Equal opportunities for Asian Actors

Wu is an outspoken advocate for more leading roles for Asian actors in Hollywood and has often spoken out against the subtle and not-so-subtle racism which emerges through discriminatory cast selection.

The "Fresh Off The Boat" TV star announced on Twitter earlier this month that "Crazy Rich Asians", is of significant importance to her and the Asian American community.

The trailblazer hopes to headline more exciting projects as she continues to flex her diverse acting range.

Life saw Constance Wu in debt, holding three jobs and facing rejections before FOTB. Her success is so well deserved!
