Man Gives Up S$10,000 Job As Bank Trader To Help Mother Run Hawker Business
What a filial son!
How many of you can relate to this? You’re at your desk job, looking at another report, or typing out another email, and you’re wondering to yourself, when will this ever end? You ask yourself if you’re truly living your best life and if life was meant to be more than just crunching numbers.
Well, if you relate to any of that, then you will also relate to this man’s story.
Gave up his job for his mother
Jeffrey Goh was earning big bucks at his corporate job. In fact, as a bank trader, he was bringing in S$10,000 every month. It was a cushy job – probably one every corporate ladder climber dreamed of having.
But it was not enough. Something was missing.
About five years ago, his mother had to close down her business selling soon kueh as a hawker. Her business was popular among the locals in the heartlands and she would have to withstand long hours to product hundreds of the dumplings everyday.
She worked hard for eight straight years, operating out of Dunman Hawker Centre in Singapore. But age was catching up and she couldn’t cope with the workload.
She worked into her mid-sixties and couldn’t handle it physically anymore.
Wanted to fulfil his mother’s dreams
But she loved her business and Jeffrey could see that. As her second son, Jeffrey decided that he wanted to do something about it.
So he upped and quit his S$10,000 job as a bank trader to help his mother continue her dream.
The new store reopened at Tembeling Road in August 2017 after taking a five-year break.
Be sure to drop by their shop to show some support if you’re ever in the area. We wish Jeffrey and his mother all the best in their new (old) business and we hope to see it flourish!
