George Clooney recently sold his tequila company, Casamigos (which is loosely translated to "house of friends") for a cool $1 billion.
It seems every time George Clooney is gathered with a house of friends, lots of money is involved.
George Clooney's special surprise
Friends of George Clooney have recently revealed that the Hollywood stud hosted a dinner party in 2013 and gave them the surprise of their lives.
Rande Gerber, the husband of supermodel Cindy Crawford and entertainment businessman, said that Clooney invited him and a few others over to his place, about a year before he married his wife Amal.
Gerber says, “There's a group of guys that we call 'The Boys'. George had called me and 'The Boys' and said, 'Hey, mark September 27, 2013 on your calendar. Everyone's going to come to my house for dinner.'”
At dinner, Clooney says, “Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me and how much you mean to me in my life. I came to Los Angeles, I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you.'
'So it was really important to me that while we're still all here together, that I give back.’”
That was when Clooney handed them each a briefcase and told them to open it. Inside each briefcase was $1 million in cold hard cash.
Remembering his roots
The billionaire was very vocal about his rough past. “I grew up in Kentucky, sold insurance door-to-door, ladies’ shoes, worked at an all-night liquor store and would buy suits that were too big and too long and cut the bottom of the pants off to make ties so I’d have a tie to go on job interviews.
I grew up understanding what it was like to not have health insurance for eight years.”
Hence the importance to him to show his utmost appreciation to his friends. In fact, Clooney also paid the gift tax on each of the $1 million so his friends wouldn’t have to.
Time calculated that based on the top gift tax rate of 40 percent from 2013, Clooney would have had to fork out an additional $3.5 million in taxes.
The kind of person he is
Initially, Gerber said he rejected the gift. But then shares that, “Immediately George goes, 'I'm just going to make one announcement. If Rande doesn't take the million dollars, nobody gets it.' This is who George is!”
Clooney adds to ‘The Boys’, “I know we've all been through some hard times, some of you are still going through it. You don't have to worry about your kids, you don't have to worry about, you know, school, you don't have to worry about paying your mortgage.”
That’s one helluva generous friend.
