Losing weight is not easy. It gets even harder when Christmas or Chinese New Year rolls around. But a great motivator for losing weight (or doing anything, really), is if you get paid to do so. Making money while losing weight is everyone’s dream, isn’t it? Well, this Chinese company seeks to make all those dreams come true – it pays employees for losing weight.

A company in Xi’An, China decided to place a price tag on weight loss. The new scheme involves employees losing weight and for every kilogram shed, the company will pay out 100RMB (S$20.40).

It embarked on this campaign to get its employees to live healthier lives. And obviously, since it was implemented, the campaign was very widely embraced.

Those who wanted to take part in the programme had to be weighed before work every day.

But there is a catch. It was only open to employees who lost 3KG first (without payment). Then for every subsequent kilo lost, they would be rewarded with the cash incentive.

The company has since paid out more than 10,000 yuan (S$2,034) to more than half their staff.

Too bad not all of us can work for generous Chinese companies who give out cash incentives for losing weight.

But what we can do is bet on ourselves in online weight loss challenges. People have been using money as a motivator to lose weight through online sites and apps such as DietBet, Healthy Wage, StickK and Achievement.

Some apps like Healthy Wage and DietBet require you to pay a monthly subscription fee to play, while others allow you to place individual bets.

StickK, however, works slightly differently, with no upfront payment. You will only get charged if your goals aren’t met. If that isn’t motivation to lose weight, I don’t know what is!

Do you think you would ever want to make money while losing weight? Is it truly the best motivator?
