Malaysian Police Seize 284 Luxury Handbags From Former Prime Minister Najib's Apartments

If you haven't been paying attention to the news lately, Malaysia's former prime minister Najib Razak has been under investigation for allegedly embezzling billions of dollars from a government fund. And the Malaysian police have uncovered from the Najib Razak house raid what looks like some pretty damning evidence.

Raids on his properties across Kuala Lumpur have yielded 284 boxes containing designer bags. Police were seen carting off hundreds of orange boxes containing Hermes Birkin handbags into five police trucks.

Police also discovered 72 bags containing various currencies (including Malaysian Ringgit and US dollars), watches, and jewellery.

The search of Najib's properties began Wednesday night and is still ongoing.

“The total sum worth of items cannot be ascertained now,” Amar Singh, head of the police commercial crime investigation unit, told reporters. "We'll be counting and will know by tomorrow."

Singh did add, however, that the amount of jewellery was "rather big".

On Thursday night, Najib's lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal, called the search "unwarranted harassment." He also added that "nothing meaningful has come from the search and seizure of what would appear to be insignificant personal items."

A lavish lifestyle

Najib and his wife Rosmah have lived a lavish lifestyle that has long drawn the ire of Malaysians. Najib has been accused of funnelling billions of dollars from the 1MDB government fund and into yachts, Picasso paintings, Hollywood films, a 22-carat pink diamond necklace worth US27.3M, to name a few.

Najib's wife, Rosmah Mansor, has been seen on several occasions carrying different Birkin bags. One Birkin handbag can cost up to US$300,000, but the annual salary of a prime minister is only US$70,000.

In 2015, it was reported that she bought a S$270,000 crocodile Birkin bag. In one New York Times article, one broker estimated the value of Rosmah's Birkin collection to be around US$10 million.

While Najib was in power, he was cleared by Malaysian authorities. But after losing the recent elections to Mahathir Mohammad, the investigation was reopened.
