If you’re a big fan of solo travelling, that’s great. But if you happen to be a solo traveller in need of some company, you can actually rent an oppa in Korea the next time you’re there.
Rent an oppa in Korea
But first, what’s an oppa? Oppa in Korean means older brother. But loosely used by modern woman nowadays, oppa refers to any male older than the woman by no more than 10 years.
Now, why on earth would you want to rent an oppa in Korea if you’re there for holiday?
For one, oppas are incredibly handsome men in Korea… which you wouldn’t otherwise find while on holiday there.
My first experience in Korea was visiting the capital city of Seoul. Unlike the countless hot Korean dudes I have seen in Korean dramas, the reality of Korea is that the handsome men are far and few between (no offence).
So that’s how the group behind Oh My Oppa came up with their business idea.
Oh My Oppa lets you rent an oppa in Korea
So as to not leave the land of K-dramas totally disappointed, a service called Oh My Oppa, was launched in Korea, to allow foreigners to “rent” an oppa.
“It started out as a joke that foreigners coming to Korea expect to find men like the ones they see on dramas, but no, there aren’t any men on the streets that are as good-looking, tall and nice as the TV stars,” said Lee Joon-woo, CEO of Winwincook, in an interview with The Korea Herald.
“We thought we would present these tourists with men we can be proud of. Although it was a joke at first, we followed up with an actual website, and the social media reaction has been beyond our expectations,” Lee said.
Rent an oppa in Korea service launched this year
Oh My Oppa currently features over ten Korean men for rent. Their services vary from cutting up steak for you, to taking flattering photographs and bringing you around.
They are not licensed tour guides and probably won’t be able to give you the low down on the history at memorial sites. But at the very least, you will have a handsome Korean hunk by your side.
You can choose your oppa on the website based on their personality, looks, interests and languages spoken.
Right now, for activities that require payment, the bill is split between the oppa and yourself. Some activities require extra payment.
According to Lee, the demand for oppas has mainly come from countries such as France, England and Germany, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia.
Cost of renting an oppa
As for the cost of renting an oppa through the Oh My Oppa website, the prices range from $70 to $150 for six hours.
It depends on which experience you choose. So choose wisely!
