Ms Romualdez’s late husband, Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez, bought Benguet Corp in 1974 from the previous American owners. Now, their son, Daniel Andrew, runs the oldest mining company established in 1902 as CEO. Ms Romualdez owns a minor stake in the company. Forbes also attributes her wealth to the sale of her minority stake in BDO Unibank in 2012, which is the country’s largest bank. The 82-year-old resides in the capital, Manila.

6. Betty Ang

Dropping from 20th place last year, the CEO and founder of Monde Nissin still boasts considerable wealth. Most Filipinos have probably consumed their products at some point, as Lucky Me! instant noodles were voted as the favourite noodle brand. The F&B giant owns many lines of produce after partnering with Indonesian bread-products company, Nippon Indosari, in 2016. 

5. Vivian Que-Azcona

The current standing of Mercury Drugs belies the pharmaceutical company’s humble beginnings. Mariano Que hauled a push-cart distributing affordable medicine in war-torn Manila. Since her father’s entrepreneurial startup in 1945, Ms Que-Azcona is the chairman of the company which has 1,200 branches across the country.

4. Beatrice Campos

Unilab was started by Beatrice dee Campos and her late husband, Jose, in 1945. Since then, the revenue in 2016 of PHP 41.9 billion means Unilab is the country’s largest pharmaceutical company. However, Forbes also pointed out another source of wealth in FnB manufacturer, Del Monte Pacific. Her son, Joselito Campos Jr, is the managing director and CEO. Del Monte Pacific launched its first IPO in February 2018.

3. Mercedes Gotianun

The 90-year-old started a firm with her late husband, Andrew Gotianun Sr, in 1955 selling second-hand cars. Now, she sits as chairman emeritus of Filinvest Development. Their portfolio is diverse, with interests in different industries like sugar, real estate, banking and hospitality. Their daughter, Josephine, is the current CEO.

2. Susan Co

The only married couple in this list, Lucio and Susan Co are founders of supermarket chain Puregold Price Club. The self-made billionaires own more than 350 stores across the Philippines. They also have interests in the gaming, hotels and wine distribution industries.

Mercedes’ wealth is tied to her brother, Inigo. The 62-year-old is a cousin to prominent and affluent Jaime Zobel de Ayala. She and her brother inherited shares of Ayala Corp from their late aunt. The Philippines’ oldest conglomerate has interests in telecom, real estate, education, finance, healthcare, and utilities. Inigo is also a director of Top Frontier Investment Holdings (TFHI), which is the largest shareholder of San Miguel. Ms Zobel is well-known for her philanthropy, as she donates PHP 32 million yearly to projects for education, healthcare and the arts.
