She doesn't look a day over 50!

In today’s foodie scene, people flock to restaurants that are Instagram worthy. Yet people are willing to travel as far as two hours away in Manila to meet one Chinese gourmet chef, who is making headlines for turning out Hokkien cuisine that is delicious (but may not be for the ‘gram). Meet Wok With Mom.

Simple but effective

Auntie Gemma is an 80-year-old blessed with great genes. And she looks not a day older than 50! Which is shown as she zips about her kitchen with energy and passion. Her cooking is filled with purpose, a sense of urgency but not in haste.

She and her daughter, Oi, launched their online business selling Hokkien cuisine. The recipes have been passed down from her mother. Auntie Gemma’s entrepreneurial spirit was active long before Wok With Mom.  She even expanded her cooking knowledge when she traded wine for recipes with a Cantonese chef in the 70’s.

Wok With Mom came about when Oi realised that to enjoy the dishes Auntie Gemma makes, she would have to order a 12-course meal and bring 11 friends with her. This is something she wanted to share with the world.

Because of that, you can enjoy the delicious party food in the comfort of your own home!

Great for parties – or to impress your mum!

Their specialities are Hokkien dishes that are widely ordered. Some of the most commonly ordered dishes include the “Looong Life Noodles” (PHP 686), and stuffed cuapaos (PHP 580). The sweetish braised pork knuckles (PHP 1,380). It takes 4 hours to make and is particularly popular amongst Filipino clients!

Generally, Auntie Gemma pays careful attention to the balance her dishes provide. The lettuce wraps are actually filled with more vegetables. The lighter texture means this is a healthier side dish with a natural crunch. And only at PHP 780 per order!

Perhaps Wok With Mom’s greatest achievement is the eight-treasure stuffed chicken at PHP 1,380. Because it’s a dish that’s not normally served in restaurants because of the arduous preparation required. However, it’s Auntie Gemma’s pride and joy in making this. Clearly, other people enjoy eating it, as one party ordered 17 stuff chickens!

Moreover, the unconventional crispy “Lucky Meatballs” at PHP686 are a delight!

On the whole, Wok With Mom’s is creating headlines for all the right reasons, where many Filipino’s are quickly becoming repeat customers as per Facebook reviews.
