Many people hire helpers to assist with house chores. Usually they’ll be asked to tidy up and perform basic domestic chores like cleaning and washing. Also, they could live in the home in separate quarters or come in at scheduled times.

In the Philippines, helpers are known as kasambahay. Laws and regulations exist to protect the rights of kasambahay, so they are considered as regular employees. Many expats hire them as it isn’t expensive. They even hire drivers to help ferry them around in their new environment!

Furthermore, you can hire a helper through an agency. This is easier than hiring a private or independently represented maid, as an agency will draft up a contract that covers all the usual points of employment and are generally more reliable. You won’t have to worry about the mountains of paperwork!

Helpers are also included when it comes to normal employee benefits like the Social Security System (SSS), Philippine Health Insurance System (PhilHealth), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), and 13th Month pay.

It depends whether you want helpers that live in or comes in several times a week.

The minimum wage that all domestic helpers are entitled to is Php3,500 per month. This was increased from PHp3,000 by the Regional Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) Western Visayas last year. Location has less influence on how much you pay. Hiring helpers to work in more affluent and urban areas would cost more than househelp in rural areas. But with the minimum wage increase, it is more standardised. That’s not to say that in the richer neighbourhoods like Makati, maids can’t earn Php5,000 a month and above.

If the maid lives with you, it’s worth bearing in mind you need to also pay for their utilities. This includes electricity, water, internet and a phone line.

  • Water: Php 600
  • Electricity: Php2,000
  • Internet: Php1,000
  • Phone line: Php700

All in all, utilities to cover a live-in maid is Php4,300 in addition to their salary.

Before you jump into looking to hire a helper, it’s important you go about it the right way. As with all recruitment, there always carries an inherent risk of someone misrepresenting their services and just not being very reliable. Here are a few tips to help guide you in the right way if you need some help around the house whether in the short or long term.

1. Use an agency

We can’t stress this enough! Maids are very convenient and lift a huge burden when you just don’t have the time. But a lot of people will advertise their services privately. The problem is a lot of people don’t abide by normal employer-employee agreements and this can lead into sticky situations if anything goes wrong. Agencies are a great middleman to avoid any confusion and can hold both parties accountable to the contracts.

2. Pay them well!

People are happier when they feel valued. It might be an awkward arrangement at first, but since their service is in demand, it’s helpful showing that you appreciate their help. You could even incorporate wage increases. Paying them above the minimum wage can go a long way into establishing a healthy and happy working relationship.

3. Communication is key

When you start working alongside anyone, it takes time to get used to their personality and their way of doing things. A lot of misunderstandings and possible upsets can be avoided if you communicate your expectations clearly. It’s good to encourage maids to also be open if they feel any of your demands are unreasonable and go beyond their responsibilities.

4. Make sure they have the right prerequisite documents

As with all employment, you need to provide proof that you meet the legal requirements to work as a maid. This is especially important since many maids are very young, and some may not be of age. Make sure you ask proof of the following:

  • A medical/health certificate issued by a government health officer
  • Baranggay and police clearance
  • National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance
  • A copy of their birth certificate issued by the National Statistics Office,or any document that shows the applicant’s age. Under Republic Act (RA) 10361, a domestic worker must be aged 15 and above.
